Brightspace Foundations

(updated 2023)

Overview: 60 minutes virtual training on the most commonly used tools in Brightspace to get started fast.

Audience: Beginner Brightspace Users

Length: 90 minutes

Description: The purpose of this training is to provide CCC instructors with the essential tools for getting started with D2L’s Brightspace. These topics have been carefully selected to provide you with foundational knowledge of navigating Brightspace, adding different types of content, and organizing your course.

At the end of this training you will have gained the skills to meet the minimum requirement of uploading your syllabus, in addition to learning about some of the more engaging and interactive tools.

This training serves as a prerequisite for more advanced training on other Brightspace features and interactivity.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Navigate Brightspace with ease.
  • Identify where to manage their profile settings, account settings, and notification settings, and show students how to do the same.
  • Create and manage announcements.
  • Send email to students through Brightspace.
  • Navigate and understand the Content area.
  • Create and manage modules
  • Upload a file (e.g. Syllabus) and remove a file.
  • Add an Assignment, understand the assignment options, and associate the assignment with a grade item
  • Add a Discussion topic, understand the discussion topic options, and associate the discussion with a grade item
  • Add a Quiz, understand the quiz settings, and associate the quiz with a grade item
  • Understand the student experience of Brightspace
Self-Paced Training (on Brightspace)
Recorded – 10 to 15 min increments

BSP 101:

Teaching Online-Live Courses at City Colleges of Chicago

Overview: Facilitated or self-paced 2-week course to improve synchronous online-live teaching competences.

Audience:All instructors currently teaching or interested in teaching online-live courses.

Length:Participants have two weeks to complete three units and a final project.

Time Required: Approximately six hours

Description:

BSP 101 is an asynchronous, facilitated course available for two weeks. It defines
online-live courses and gives instructors a chance to plan online-live blended learning lessons. The course shows you how to plan and design Zoom and Brightspace tools needed for effective online-live teaching.

Week 1 focuses on planning strategies.

Week 2 focuses on designing these strategies.

At the end of this training you will have improved your abilities to teach online-live courses.

Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Define online-live formats
  • Explore and practice Brightspace features helpful for online-live courses
  • Develop a plan to show learners how to navigate the async part of an online-live course with Brightspace
  • Design a blended learning online-live lesson related to learning objectives with plans for the Zoom session and the Brightspace learning activities

BSP 201:

Teaching Async Online Learning Courses at City Colleges of Chicago

3-Week Async Facilitated Training

Overview: Facilitated 3-week course (one of three) to certify instructors to teach async Online Learning courses at CCC.

Audience: All instructors interested in teaching async Online Learning courses.

Length: Three weeks

Time Required: Approximately eight hours per week

Description:

BSP 201 defines online and hybrid (blended learning) courses, covering instructors’ roles and responsibilities for teaching online and/or hybrid courses at any of the seven CCC colleges.

Week 1 focuses on introductions, Brightspace’s basic tools and navigation, the syllabus, and how
to prepare your loaded course for the new term.

Week 2 focuses on Brightspace’s advanced tools, allowing time for instructors to practice.

Week 3 focuses on feedback, evaluation, and the Grades Tool.

Each week, you’ll practice tasks in a training classroom, which is then reviewed by the facilitator.

Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Define online and hybrid formats, including the roles and responsibilities of online instructors at CCC.
  • Demonstrate use of these Brightspace Tools in a Brightspace training classroom: Modules and Submodules, Discussion Forums and Topics, Quizzes, Assignments, Grades, Groups, Checklists, the Calendar, Awards, Intelligent Agents, and Video Note,
  • Practice developing an online persona and building an online community by moderating one discussion topic, including a summary post.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide constructive online feedback to learners.

BSP 201 is one of three courses required to be certified to teach async Online Learning courses at CCC. For more information about the other two, please see the Online Learning website.

Brightspace Bootcamp

Overview: 120 minutes virtual training on Brightspace course tools

Audience: Beginner to Intermediate Brightspace Users

Length: 110 minutes with 10 minutes for questions

Overview: 60 minutes virtual training on the most commonly used tools in Brightspace to get started fast.

Audience: Beginner to Intermediate Brightspace Users

Length: 50 minutes with 10 minutes for questions

Topics:

Part 1: Review (16 minutes)

  • How to log in (from CCC webpage or direct URL) and access classes (2 minutes)
  • What are the Minibar & Navbars—what is there in each? (3 minutes)
  • What does Course Home vs. Content do? How do they differ? (1 minute)
  • How to check Course Dates/Set Course End Date through Course Offering (2 minutes)
  • How to send email to students through Classlist (4 minutes)
  • How to post an announcement and copy/paste to a Classlist e-mail (4 minutes)

Part 2: Quick Design 101 (how to create simple modules based on your syllabus’s needs) (31 minutes)

  • Create a module titled Assignments and create one new assignment (with grade item). Call it Assignment 1. (7 minutes)
  • Create a module titled Discussions and create one new discussion (with grade item). Call it Discussion 1. (6 minutes)
  • Create a module titled Quizzes and create quizzes there (with grade item first, then Quiz set-up). (6 minutes)
  • Create a Topic module titled Week 10: Concepts of Identity (or another week with topic) and show examples of creating topics, assignments, quizzes, discussions, etc. in it. Show one example, but talk about how one might do the others. (3 minutes)
  • Create a module titled Zoom and use Existing ActivitiesExternal Learning Tools to set up a link. (2 minutes)
  • Show the Gradebook and give links to D2L Playlists or Knowledge Base articles in the Chat. Don’t get bogged down by the gradebook. Demonstrate how to create a grade item, so they know how to do this if necessary. (4 minutes)
  • Create a Group and show how one chooses different enrollments. (3 minutes)
