The variance in need for text to background contrast, font size and type is so vast among people that no one combination can be considered as ‘normal’ or ‘average’. Brightspace simply aligns with the WCAG standards and relies on browser tools for further personalization.
For those with visual processing difficulties using Brightspace, go to Account Settings to adjust the font size and choose if you need OpenDyslexic font.
Here are some browser plugins you may wish to try. Use any one of them to bring the contrast up to your personal preference.
High Contrast – Allows setting of background and foreground colors. Includes increased contrast and inverted color options.
Whitebuster – Changes only the background color – used to reduce glare from whitespace.
BackgroundSkin – Changes page background color.
Change Page Colors – Changes background and text colors.
Invert Page Colours – Changes background between black and white.
Dark Background and Light Text – Customizable light text on dark background.
Font & Size Changer – Changes font size and font family
Font Size Increase – Increases font size.
Layout, white space and clear navigation links can also help. Blinking, scrolling and other animations are often unhelpful and can cause distractions for some. Further advice from Iansyst Dyslexia and Visual Stress.
